Khichdi Recipe for Babies, Toddlers and Kids

Khichdi recipe for Babies– Khichdi is basically a wholesome food, complete for all ages, which is a mixture of some dals or lentils, vegetables and rice. It is one of the staples in our home and one of the first foods that I give to my daughter. It can be prepared in so many ways that we make itatleast one every week or fortnight. It is also a comfort food and whenever my daughter is unwell, khichdi is what makes her feel good. So, today we have 10 different types of this awesome, wholesome meal for you.

1) Plainkhichdi recipe for babies ( 6-9 months old) (no salt)

Before you start giving vegetable khichdi to baby post introducing rice and dal, you can first make this basic, plain khichdi which is very easy to digest. Even though we have not put any salt or spices, we can use turmeric for it’s obvious benefits.

Ingredients

1 tbsp moong dal (washed and soaked in water half hour)

1 tbsp rice dal (washed and soaked in water half hour)

pinch of turmeric

Recipe

Put everything in a pressure cooker with 1 cup water.

Let it cook for 3-4 whistles.

If you feel you want to thin it add some hot water as required.

Mash with a spoon and give it to baby.

2) Plain khichdi with vegetables for 6-9 months old without salt

Once your baby is used to basic beginner foods like plain khichdi, fruit purees etc, you may want to add vegetables to your baby’s khichdi to make it a complete meal, you may use this simple recipe of no salt, no spices vegetable khichdi. This is apt for 6-9 months old babies.

3) Vegetable khichdi recipe for babies(9-12 months) (no salt)

You can give this khichdi to your baby once s/he is used to having plain version. This khichdi has added ghee for healthy fats and simple spices like cumin and bayleaf, but no salt.

Ingredients

1/2 cup rice

1/2 cupmoong dal (green gram)

1 cup Mixed vegetable washed and chopped into small pieces( carrot, potato, few peas, beans etc)(Add as many veggies as you like)

1 teaspoon ghee

A pinch of turmeric

1/2 tsp cumin seeds

chopped coriander leaves

Recipe

Clean and wash dal and rice well.

Soak dal and rice in water for half an hour.

Heat the ghee in pressure cooker.

Put the cumin seeds till it crackles.

Add dal and rice and sauté a little and add vegetables.

Add a pinch of turmeric.

Add water and pressure cook this for 3-4 whistles, till everything is well- cooked.

Mash khichdi lightly with a spoon.

Serve it with a little the on top.

4) Toor dal / Pigeon peas khichdi recipe for babies, toddlers and kids

Toordal or pigeon peas also known asarhardalin North India is a staple in most Indian homes. It isusually introduced to babies after moong dal as it is slight heavier. You can give this to your baby after 9 months. This recipe does not include any salt, but you add salt to taste when you make this khichdi for toddlers and older kids.

Ingredients

1/2 cup rice

1/4 cup toor dal ( yellow lentils)

1 teaspoon of ghee

1/2 tsp of cumin seeds

1 pinch hing (asafoetida)

1/2 tsp of turmeric

Recipe

Clean and wash toor dal and rice well. All the milkiness should go away.

Soak dal and rice in water for half an hour.

Put dal and rice in cooker.

Put 2 cups of water into it.

Pressure cook dal and rice with water and turmeric till well-cooked (4-5 whistles).

Let the cooker cool down by itself.

Heat the ghee in a pan.

Put the cumin seeds and hing till cumin crackles.

Cook for few more minutes to get the consistency you like. Add some more water if needed.

Mash the khichdi lightly with a spoon and serve with some more ghee on top if you want.

5) Spinach khichdi recipe for babies (10-12 months)

Spinach is a favorite vegetable in our household and I want my daughter too to love the nutritious veggie. This variation came from the dal palak that we usually make. We are using toor dal in this recipe.

Ingredients

1/2 cup rice

1/4 cup toor dal ( yellow lentils)

1/2 cup spinach finely chopped

1 teaspoon of ghee

1/2 tsp of cumin seeds

2 cloves of garlic whole

1/2 tsp pinch of turmeric

Recipe

  • Clean and wash toor dal and rice well. All the milkiness should go away.
  • Soak dal and rice in water for half an hour.
  • Pressure cook dal and rice with water and turmeric till well-cooked (4-5 whistles).
  • Heat the ghee in a pan.
  • Put the cumin seeds till it crackles.
  • Add whole garlic pods.
  • Now add chopped or pureed spinach and saute for some time in open pan.
  • When spinach is cooked, add the cooked dal and rice and mix well.
  • Cook for few more minutes to get the consistency you like. Add some more water if needed.
  • Remove garlic cloves before giving to baby if you want.
  • Mash khichdi lightly with a spoon and serve with some more ghee if you want.
