Ginger Elixir Recipe (Jamu Juice) (2024)

In This Post You'll Learn:

Ginger Elixer aka Jamu (Indonesian Turmeric Ginger Drink)

I made this ginger elixir recipe because I wanted a drink that would elevate me each day. Packed with so antioxidants and nutrition I have to say this is my all-time favourite drink. A traditional Indonesian herbal drink it has grown in popularity so much over the years.

Originally this was to go in my new keto vegan cookbook. It still will, but it is so good I felt the need to share.

The Ingredients

Here is everything you need to whip up a quick batch of my delicious ginger elixir recipe. I will add some alternatives below, as you may want to add more or less to the mixture.

Ginger Elixir Recipe (Jamu Juice) (1)

Fresh Turmeric Root – available in most supermarkets. Pick pieces that are firm and not soft or wrinkly.

Fresh Ginger – I use organic ginger. Remove the skin and chop before mixing.

Cayenne Powder – Add as little or as much as you like. It does add a little kick to the Jamu juice.

Fresh mint – I also had fresh leaves when mixed with soda water.

Lemon juice – use fresh lemon juice or fresh lime juice.

Salt flakesadds magnesium and brings out the flavor of the ginger and turmeric.

How To Make Ginger Elixir

This recipe is simply made by blending, heating and infusing the ginger and turmeric into the water. Then add the remaining ingredients.

However, I understand that some of you may prefer to have a raw ginger elixir. So anyway here are my hot tips for the best ginger elixirs.

Use fresh ginger and turmeric

Honestly, the flavour of these two combined is sensational! There are so many studies into the powers of these two plants packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory benefits. They are used so widely in herbal medicine, and many articles are widely available on the internet protesting their health benefits.

HOT TIP – after I have made the elixir, I keep the ginger and turmeric and reuse them in the next batch. Both ginger and turmeric can be stored in the freezer and simply thawed or grated as needed. This will reduce wastage and save money. Plus no health benefits are lost through freezing.

How To Make Raw Ginger Elixir

This is just as simple, but takes a little while longer to infuse.

Simply add the ginger and turmeric to a food processor, slow press juicer, or grate them and add them to room temperature filtered water. I recommend room-temperature water to help infuse the flavors. Leave this, covered at room temperature for a few hours or overnight. This could also be added to a mason jar and kept at room temperature for up to a week to truly infuse a stronger flavor. Add all the ingredients at once if you wish.

Either cooked or raw, this recipe makes an amazing ginger and turmeric elixir.

How to Use Jamu Juice Shots

Here are just a few ways to serve this delicious elixir.

  1. Straight up – neat. Serve in a half cup measure hot or cold.
  2. Over ice with coconut water or soda water. Mix it with homemade electrolytes.
  3. Serve a half cup measure in a large glass of soda water with fresh mint or rosemary.
  4. Add a splash of apple cider vinegar to any version. It is also enjoyed with raw honey.
  5. Mix 1 cup of elixir with 5 tablespoons of gelatin. Leave for 5 minutes to bloom before heating until all the gelatin is dissolved. Strain and pour into a gummy mould for tasty snacking keto gummies. Add some sweetener or a few drops of cinnamon extract/cinnamon Lorann oil for a bit of extra kick. I can attest to the fact that these gummies are simply AMAZING! Like a cinnamon red hot ginger flavour. So damn good!
