Using overripe bananas helps ensure you’re getting the highest natural sugar content, which gives this semi-sweet, delicious dessert-y bread more balance and that memorable taste that you’re searching for. There’s a reason this is my most popular recipe! Eating a warm slice (or two) feels like a hug from my mom, and I know for many of you, it evokes that same level of comfort.

This recipe is also incredibly easy to pull off, without compromising on taste. You’ll end up with a perfectly moist, filling chocolate chip banana bread. Whenever I want to show someone I’m thinking about them — welcoming a new neighbor, visiting a sick relative, celebrating a friend’s birthday — this is often my go-to recipe because it is so universally popular!

Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Recipe FAQ

Can I make recipe substitutions?

If you want to lighten it up, feel free to omit the oil (or sub in applesauce) and replace the egg with 2 egg whites! We do this all the time, and it turns out great. You can also use whole wheat flour in place of the all-purpose flour.

You could also experiment with the type of chocolate chips you use, depending on your preference. Some people also like to add more than the recipe calls for, but I find this to be the ideal balance between the chips, banana, and bread.

If you want to try other forms of chocolate — such as Reese’s Cups — read on for a few ideas!

How do you keep chocolate chip banana bread fresh?

I’ve always found that this recipe keeps well simply wrapped in foil on the counter for a few days.If you know you won’t finish it in that amount of time (and don’t want to share!), you can easily freeze it.

Can I make banana bread muffins instead?

Yes! You can easily adapt this recipe to make banana bread muffins! Just adjust the baking time to 20 minutes.

How do you freeze this chocolate chip banana bread recipe?

This bread freezes REALLY well. If you have a ton of bananas and are wanting to make multiple loaves, it’s a great idea to freeze some for later! Wrap the cooled loaf in plastic wrap and then in foil. It should keep for a couple of months, but the longer you wait, the less it may taste like the original, so don’t forget about it!

When you’re ready to eat it, let it thaw at room temperature before slicing. You could also freeze individually wrapped slices for convenience — it’s more work up front but you may thank yourself later.

What can I add to this chocolate chip banana bread recipe?

There are so many fun ways to jazz up banana bread! Here are a few ideas:

✔️ Mix 1/4 cup peanut butter into the batter and add chopped Reese’s peanut butter cups.

✔️ Mix in toffee bits. The toffee will melt during baking and leave sweet little spots of caramel.

✔️ Pour half of the batter into the loaf pan. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of cinnamon sugar over the batter and then pour the rest of the batter on top. This will create a delicious cinnamon swirl.

✔️ Glaze! Add a peanut butter glaze or a chocolate glaze or a maple glaze. It’s amazing how a simple glaze can change a loaf of bread into a beautiful loaf cake!

✔️ Add 1/2 teaspoon of almond extract, 1/2 teaspoon of butter extract, and 1/2 cup of sprinkles to make funfetti bread!

FAQs

Why did my banana bread flop? ›

Some people do not preheat their oven long enough.

It can take 15 minutes to properly preheat some ovens. If your oven has not reached the correct baking temperature before the banana bread is placed in the oven, the banana bread will be undercooked and more likely to sink.

Why is banana bread gummy? ›

You Over-Mix the Batter

For soft and tender banana bread, gently stir the wet ingredients into the dry — don't overmix! The more you stir, the more gluten will develop. The result will be a tough, rubbery banana bread. Simply stir until moist, and then do no more.

How many bananas are in Chrissy Teigen's banana bread? ›

The tldr; is that she needed 6 very ripe bananas to work on this recipe, but as you know you can not just buy overly ripe bananas at the store, so she went to Twitter and called on her followers.

Why doesn't banana bread cook in the middle? ›

You may be baking at too high a temperature. Home ovens are often not accurate. Try lowering the temperature by 25°F, and bake for a slightly longer time. If you are using a dark colored pan like many non-stick pans it will cause the outside to brown more quickly while the inside stays raw.

Why does my banana bread not taste good? ›

Using too much butter makes for a heavier cake with less banana flavor. Using double the amount of butter that the recipe called for left me with a loaf that was dry on the outside and moist on the inside.

How long do I let banana bread cool? ›

Let it cool for 10 minutes — this helps the loaf solidify and makes it easier to remove from the pan. Remove from pan and cool another 10 minutes. Grasping the parchment paper sling, lift the loaf out of the pan and place on the cooling rack. Cool for another 10 minutes before slicing.

What happens when you put too much banana in banana bread? ›

Banana bread recipes typically ask you to use overripe bananas so that they're easier to mush. This means it's tempting to toss all your bananas into the mix when you're ready to bake, to avoid food waste. But if you add too much of the fruit into your batter, your bread could turn out mushy, heavy, and wet.

Can bananas be too ripe for banana bread? ›

If they smell off, that's another good indicator that they are no longer okay to use. Rotten bananas will often have a fermented or alcohol-like smell. While it's okay if the banana peel is dark brown or even black, if the inside is too, then the fruit is beyond ripe and now on its way to rotten.

Why does my banana bread get wet on top? ›

Sugars are hygroscopic, meaning they attract water. Within baked goods, sugars help maintain a moist and tender crumb. Sugar on the exposed tops, however, will grab water from humid air, creating a wet or sticky top.

Is it OK to eat a bunch of bananas? ›

While there's no blanket rule, sticking to one to two bananas per day shouldn't cause issues for most people. With that said, remember that they are relatively high in carbohydrates, so eating them along with protein or fat is also advisable to support stable energy levels.

How many bananas equal 2 cups? ›

1 banana: 2/3 cup chopped | 1/2 cup mashed. 1-1/2 bananas: 1 cup chopped | 3/4 cup mashed. 2 bananas: 1-1/3 cups chopped | 1 cup mashed. 3 bananas: 2 cups chopped | 1-1/2 cups mashed.

How many bananas is 1lb? ›

One pound of bananas is about three bananas, each about five inches in length. Now the next time you find this fruit on sale, you can quickly do the math to calculate how many to pick up for a pound and beyond.

How do I get the middle of my banana bread to cook? ›

If your bread is getting overdone on the outside while still undercooked in the center, reduce the oven temperature and bake it for a longer time. The primary reason as to why banana bread may be raw in the middle is simply down to not enough cooking time.

Why does the outside of my banana bread burn? ›

The problem may be your oven, or you may be putting your loaf too near the bottom element of the oven. Get an oven thermometer and use it to check the actual temperature of the oven.

How do you keep banana bread from collapsing? ›

Also measure the leavening agents carefully (baking powder and/or bicarbonate of soda/baking soda) using proper measuring spoons. Too much leavening can cause the bread to rise up too much and this will cause it to sink back as it cools. If you are having problems still then you could try making banana muffins instead.

How do I keep my bread from collapsing? ›

This tip applies to loaves specifically. For recipes like banana bread, lemon loaf, or pound cake, your best bet is to bake in a metal loaf pan. Metal is a quick and efficient conductor of heat. This helps to ensure your recipe will cook through the center and not collapse.

Why did my bread collapse after baking? ›

Baking temperature

Some ovens run hotter than its settings, some cooler. If the oven is too hot the loaf will be brown and crispy on the outside but doughy in the middle and may collapse as it cools. When bread is baked at too low a temperature it will not rise enough in the oven resulting in a dense and sunken loaf.
